What to eat, do, and know in Austin · August 13

Hi friends, this is the week summer starts to end on paper. School calendars kick in, move-in trucks appear near campus, and the roads quietly rearrange themselves. So this week has a little of that turning-point energy: a cool, dim steakhouse dinner, a genuinely great show at Stubb’s, and the date next week that changes how everyone gets around.

Some nights you want to escape the heat into something dark, cold, and a little bit of an occasion, and VanHorn’s is built for exactly that. It is a New-York-classic steakhouse downtown from the team behind Bill’s Oyster: wood paneling, leather booths, a serious martini, and some of the best beef in the city. It already feels like it has been there for decades, which is the highest compliment a steakhouse can earn. The Infatuation calls it downtown’s most exciting steakhouse, and it is the rare splurge that lives up to its own room. Book on Resy, order a martini, and let the afternoon heat be someone else’s problem. If the full splurge is not the plan, happy hour runs from 3 to 5:30 every day.

Franz Ferdinand plays Stubb’s on Friday, and it is the clean marquee of the weekend. Twenty-two years on, “Take Me Out” still detonates a dance floor, and the band is a genuinely tight live act at exactly the kind of outdoor venue that films beautifully at golden hour. Stubb’s Waller Creek amphitheater is an Austin rite of passage: barbecue smoke, a warm night, a crowd that knows every word. Sunday Mourners open, doors are at 7, and it is August, so plan on the sun being down before the songs you came for. One more thing worth knowing: your wristband gets you into the late show on the indoor stage at 10, free, if there is still room.

Here is the one that reshapes everyone’s week, parent or not. Austin ISD’s first day of class is Tuesday, August 18, which means school zones and their reduced speed limits switch back on across the city that morning, and the bus and pickup-line traffic returns to your commute overnight. Texas does not allow speed cameras, so this is enforced by actual officers, and school-zone fines are doubled: figure $400 to $600, and north of $500 if you are more than 15 over. It stacks up from there. UT residence halls open for move-in on Friday and Saturday, August 21 and 22, and both UT and ACC start classes on Monday, August 24, which is when West Campus, Guadalupe, and I-35 get genuinely bad.

Starting Tuesday the 18th, build in a few extra minutes and slow down in the school zones, and if you go anywhere near campus the weekend of the 21st, expect the move-in crush and route around it.

Mandola’s Italian Kitchen · Scampi

This week’s dish is the Scampi at Mandola’s Italian Kitchen, sent in by the restaurant. Shrimp go into butter, garlic, white wine, and fresh lemon, and it lands with a side of fettuccine Alfredo.
